Scottish independence vote draws a step nearer

Looks like the 21st century is going to be a good one for small government and the resurgence of historical cultures:

Scotland’s government today took the first official step towards holding a referendum on whether the nation should secede from the United Kingdom, according to The New York Times.

Scottish officials hope to hold the referendum in 2014, which could allow the nation of five million to sever itself in as little as four years from England, Northern Ireland and Wales.

Good for Scotland! Now - when do we get our referendum? Or is the DC Empire actually the Hotel California of nations?

And the British Prime Minister thinks this vote should come up before the entire UK?

We didn't take a poll of our oppressors - not the first OR the second time we sought our independence!

Who gives a hoot in hell how non-Scots vote over the issue?

I'll answer my own question: The English version of the Yankee!

I was in Scotland last Friday and we talked about this at dinner. The two Scots next to me indicated they would vote AGAINST independence. One said because he didn't want to be dominated by a Glaswegian based political cabal and the other because he thought Scotland was better off being part of the UK.

Sounded a lot like some of the feedback we get when discussing Southern secession here.

The South will get its referendum as soon as DC can replace a majority of Southrons with hispanics from Mehico and every other country they can; but, not to worry DC is working on it as fast as they can.

Or given the secrecy ethic in Washington, the name of an establishment that used to be near Massillon, Ohio: "No-Tel Motel"!

Some who claim to support government being based on the consent of the governed allege that the 1861 secessions were illegitimate because the proper process was not followed. According to them secession can only occur when the remaining states (whether unanimous or a majority of some sort) agree that a state may secede. But this is nonsense. The reason a state would seek to withdraw is that the union is no longer for its benefit. More accurately it would withdraw because it is being exploited. This is what happened in 1861 with the tariff. It is nonsense to expect the exploiting states to permit the exploited to leave.
