Not everyone was ignorant of the coup. Makes me think that even in 1787 the "will of the people" could be easily manipulated and controlled -- or at least misrepresented sufficiently for political purposes.

But just what is this collective called the people? Does it have a mind (god) of its own? We should carefully consider the progression whereby God (the only Sovereign) was replaced by the people.
