In light of this recent tragedy here in Charlotte, where an ex-con murdered his co-worker in a bungled robbery, this campaign in Philadelphia to prohibit ALL background checks can only be called a tragedy in the making:

New legislation in Philadelphia aimed at giving ex-convicts a chance to make a better first impression at job interviews was the topic of a legal seminar this morning in center city. Employers were learning how the law is being enforced by the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations.

The law firm of Zarwin Baum hosted the seminar for some of their clients, addressing a new regulation that has been dubbed “Ban the Box.”

Those regulations prohibit employers from inquiring about a job applicant’s criminal background on the initial application. “Banning the box” refers to the box that would ask, “Have you ever been convicted of a crime?”

I'm all for giving someone a second chance - that is, IF they demonstrate true repentance. But an employer can't even make that determination if he doesn't know all the facts. For the safety of innocent co-workers, employers must be able to uncover an applicant's history.

Where are the engineering jobs going?

To immigrants, that's where. From Numbers USA:

Earlier this week, Pres. Obama was caught off-guard in an internet Q&A when a woman asked why the government continues to issue work visas to foreign engineers while her engineer husband can't find a job.

The President found the question "interesting" because "industry tells me that they don't have enough highly skilled engineers."

The White House sent out spokespersons to defend the President by talking about how not enough Americans are getting engineering degrees.

My immediate question was: How many Americans with engineering degrees don't have an engineering job? Amazingly just this afternoon, Dr. Steve Camarota of the Center for Immigration Studies has published a report that answers the question.

We will talk more about the meaning of these stats in the webcast. But chew on the numbers.

U.S.-BORN INDIVIDUALS WITH ENGINEERING DEGREES (under age 66)

101,000 -- U.S. engineers looking for a job who can't find any work at all

Government isn't very good at creating jobs, but it's darned effective at erecting barriers that favor politically connected big business.

Obama, that man of the people, still enjoys more support from the financial industry than any of his Republican rivals. This was true in the 2008 election, too.

Stabbing American workers in the back is a win-win for Obama. He gets the big money from big business, which can't get enough cheap, exploitable labor. And his leftist base gets more Third-World immigrants - future clients.

And folks wonder why the League of the South considers this government illegitimate.

Israel to deport South Sudanese

I guess Israel didn't get the memo telling them opening their borders would magically make their country better:

Some 7,000 South Sudanese are believed to be in Israel, part of a larger influx of African migrants who have poured into the country in recent years. Some are refugees, while others are seeking employment.

Israel is trying to stop the wave of arrivals, building a barrier along the border with Egypt and pledging tough punishments to people who assist them.

Speaking Tuesday, Haddad said the South Sudanese will be offered voluntary deportation and around $1,300. After March 31, Haddad says they will be deported.

Good for the Israelis. They know the primary right of peoples and nations is that of NOT committing suicide.

Problem is, it's hippy poop. Police say that while camping out on the City Hall lawn and lifting up our collective conscience, the protesters used a storm drain for a commode. The Fire Department's HazMat team has been called in to clean it up.

Abbeville Institute Conference

The Abbeville Institute is holding its Tenth Annual Scholar's Conference. This year's theme is, "The War Between The States: Other Voices, Other Views." From their web site:

Nationalist historians for 150 years have protected Americans from confronting the stark immorality of prosecuting what French philosopher Bertrand de Jouvenel called, “a war such as Europe had never yet seen” to force eleven States into a federation from which their people had voted to secede. Should eleven American States secede today and form a federation of their own, such a war would be judged criminal.

Northern opposition to the war was more extensive, complex and had more respectable adherents than the mainline account allows, e.g., Governor Seymour of New York, 1861: “Indeed, Can we so entirely forget the past history of our country, that we can stand upon the point of pride against states whose citizens battled with our fathers and poured out their blood upon the soil of our state. Blacks vs. Koreans in Dallas

The shape of things to come? Could be - and it's scary:

Korea's consul-general in Houston is now in Dallas, Texas, to try and quell rising anti-Korean sentiment there after a dispute between different ethnic groups began spiraling out of control.

This comes as leaders of the African-American community in southern Dallas called for a boycott of Asian-owned businesses as a protest against what they call "racist business-owners."

Tensions have been mounting since early this month, when a Korean owner of a gas station and an African-American customer got into a verbal altercation, in which racial slurs were reportedly made.

The Korean government has been advising the Korean community there to remain calm and not stoke the fire.

Dallas has the largest Korean-American community in the state of Texas with about 1,000 businesses there owned by Koreans.

Where to begin?

First of all, why is the Korean government involved in a law enforcement problem in Dallas, Texas? I can't think of a more chilling illustration of how America has been transformed from a nation into nothing more than an extended stay motel.

This is an example of the unforeseen consequences of DC's open borders policy. Only "racist" white Southerners conflict with blacks, right? But now we're seeing some novel racial clashes taking place. What's next? Uighurs and Palestinians duking it out in Memphis? Albanians and Masai squabbling in the Pensacola Wal-Mart?

Finally, at some point we have to recognize that all the airy theories and pontification about "diversity" is dangerously out of touch with the way the real world functions. Only a cloistered university professor could imagine that diversity provides "tremendous benefits in terms of improved morale, outside-the-box thinking, greater teamwork, and an atmosphere of mutual understanding and respect."

That emperor is naked. And not all that good looking.

Glenn Greenwald rips into the Democrats' fake concern for Constitutional rights. With one of their own in the White House, Panetta (and many other Democrats) say it's just fine that the Commander-in-Chief wields all the dictatorial powers, and then some, that W and Cheney claimed:

Whoa! Panetta, a liberal Democrat from the Clinton administration, now clicks his heels and defends the president's power to call legal hits at will?

Sure. As George Will recently observed, "progressives" have always longed to forge a nation where the citizens march "in lock step, shoulder to shoulder, obedient to orders from a commanding officer." All in the name of "progress," you see.

But that's the role of liberalism in the DC Empire - it gussies up brute power with a facade of noble intentions. What I once wrote about the Bush regime is just as true about Obama:

Bitter cold records broken in Alaska

The weather station in Jim River, AK closed in on the all time record coldest temperature of -80°F set in 1971. That’s not only the Alaska all-time record, but the record for the entire United States. Unfortunately, the weather station stopped reporting at -79°F.

With shouts of "Arrest us! We'll multiply!" some members of Occupy Charlotte refused police warnings to end their protest on the City Hall lawn. The six who were arrested had locked legs and refused to budge, requiring the police to physically remove them from the lawn, and take them into custody.

These are dangerous people. A month ago, four Charlotte Occupiers were arrested for arson.

Fighting the smears

The Southern Poverty Law Center's Hatewatch blog features a post that slams State and local efforts to stop illegal immigration as the work of "xenophobes and nativists." (I assume there's nothing wrong with the radical alienists of La Raza and MEChA.) The Immigration Reform Law Institute has filed an amicus brief defending Utah's immigration law, and that just won't do, rails Mark Potok, because the Institute is connected to the Federation for American Immigration Reform, and they're connected to the Pioneer Fund. And the Fund, according to Potok, was "started by Nazi sympathizers."

Really? The links Potok provided are to older SPLC rants, rather than to the maligned group. So I Googled "Pioneer Fund" just to see what they had to say for themselves.

It turns out that five of those founders fought for the Allies in World War II, and one served as a staff attorney at the Nuremberg Tribunal. The Fund is purely a research organization, dedicated to the "scientific study of heredity and human differences."

And if there are scientific explanations for such differences as, oh, the racial performance gap - which even liberals acknowledge - then by all means let's explore them. Maybe, suggests Steve Sailer, understanding them can lead to better policies in the schools and the workplace.

What burns me about Potok's post is the utter dishonesty of his argument. On the Internet, a link serves the function of a footnote - it's the proof of your assertion. Instead, he linked to his own organization's past attacks on the very individuals and groups being attacked.

You'll notice that whenever I make a point, I link to that person's or group's own web site to back up my argument. For example, if I claim Mark Potok collaborates with Communists, I don't link to the Free Magnolia, but to the SPLC and to The Socialist Worker, where the reader can examine the quotes and make up his own mind if I characterized the facts correctly.

But distortion of the facts and intimidation are all our enemies have going for them. Read the SPLC attack on FAIR, and you'll see it comes down to nothing but name-calling. That's not a free exchange of ideas, but character assassination. Such will only poison the public forum.

The South's history, thought, and actions have long been subject to similar intellectual dishonesty and outright slander, and the left and its allies are doing the same to conservatives. But the truth is on our side, and we will fight our fight honestly and energetically. That's what I try to do on this blog, and I deeply appreciate the contributions from readers who want to see this work continue.

So when you consider whether to renew your League of the South membership, or if you want to support this blog, just remember the unethical and deceptive methods of those who attack us. You'll know what to do.

NAACP opposes popular vote

This May, North Carolina will give the people of this State the opportunity to consider an amendment upholding traditional marriage.

But the NAACP wants it struck from the ballot. NAACP President Benjamin Todd Jealous claims same-sex "marriage" is today's battleground in the never-ending civil rights movement: "And if we at the NAACP are committed to anything, it's pushing America closer to her ideals."

No, it isn't. The NAACP now stands with the venomous left, which seeks to wreck this country so it can rebuild it on its own twisted terms. In fact, the NAACP is collaborating with hard-left groups against blacks, who overwhelmingly support traditional marriage. In fact, a 2009 Pew Forum poll revealed that 62% of blacks opposed gay marriage.

Yes, if you do not support the radical "gay" agenda, then you suffer from a debilitating, irrational fear. Just as the old Soviet Union would ship protesters to mental institutions, the last surviving Evil Empire dismisses its dissidents as just plain crazy.

Sebesta's latest blogging project is entitled, "Neo-Confederate Homophobia," and sub-titled, "A blog for the Lesbian, gay, bi, and transgender communities about neo-Confederate homophobia. Homophobia and neo-Confederacy overlap and intersect much more than is realized." No, really.

Intrigued, I wanted to leave a helpful and supportive comment. Sadly, I was informed, "Only a member of this blog may post a comment." Kirkpatrick Sale, the director of the Middlebury Institute, reviews Morris Berman's Why America Failed. Berman's book, argues Sale, is essential to understanding how the DC Empire achieved its present status. It did so by relentlessly pursuing its notion of "progress," an impossible goal perfectly suitable for "a nation of hustlers," a people "relentlessly on the make."

And what does a nation of hustlers do to those who get in their way? The South is a perfect example - as well as a model for future conquests:

In fact that civilization will always take steps to marginalize it, even destroy it if necessary, a fact that Berman illustrates in a chapter on the antebellum South. He shows how the South was "the one example we have of an opponent of [the dominant] ideology that had real political teeth," and blatantly opted for a life premodern (indeed "neofeudal"), agrarian, slow, conservative, and honoring tradition, honor, chivalry, and hospitality more than making a buck or inventing a gadget. This ultimately the increasingly industrial and expansive North could not stand and so began a war to destroy it. "The treatment of the South by the North," Berman says, "was the template for the way the United States would come to treat any nation it regarded as an enemy: not merely a scorched earth policy, but also a ‘scorched soul’ policy’" that it would use in Hawaii, the Philippines, Cuba, Japan, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, and anywhere else it could achieve it.

This is why the Civil War remains a hot issue today - the triumphalist mythology that grew out of the Northern victory is the foundation for today's militarism, which is prettied up with talk of "liberation" and "equality."

Scottish independence vote draws a step nearer

Scotland’s government today took the first official step towards holding a referendum on whether the nation should secede from the United Kingdom, according to The New York Times.

Alabama kills two birds with one stone

One law successfully cuts illegal immigration AND unemployment! Here are the numbers:

Ever since Alabama began implementing its immigration enforcement law, H.B. 56, in late September, the state’s unemployment rate has been dropping like a stone. In just the first month the law was in effect, unemployment in Alabama shrank from 9.8 percent of the workforce to 9.3 percent. And now the latest figures are in…and the news couldn’t be worse (for the Obama administration, the illegal alien lobby, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce that is): Alabama’s unemployment rate checked in at 8.1 percent in December. That’s more than a 17 percent reduction since September.

This is a triple embarrassment for Obama. It demonstrates that States' Rights in not only alive, but powerful. Though the Treason Lobby screams there's nothing we can do about the demographic upheaval, Alabama's law validates State and other local efforts to do the job Obama won't do. Finally, it also shows people can solve their own problems without DC's intervention.

The deadly ideal

On the night of January 13, Mark Anthony Cox killed his manager, Danielle Watson, at the Flying Biscuit Cafe in Charlotte as she was closing up. He wrapped her body in plastic and dumped it in the garbage.

He drove off in her car with $2,500.

The victim was engaged and expecting a baby. Cox now faces double murder charges.

But as disturbing as this story is, it gets worse:

The Charlotte crime is eerily similar to other crimes for which Cox served prison time. He was released in November of 2011 after serving three years. He started working at the Flying Biscuit within a few weeks.

Back in 2008, Cox was 18 when he worked in the kitchen at a Sonic restaurant in eastern North Carolina.

Police in Roanoke Rapids told WBTV's Sharon Smith that Cox and some co-conspirators planned to rob the restaurant. His co-workers were held at gunpoint, while the robber demanded $3100.

Cox was given a three-year-suspended prison, which was suspended for probation. It was only activated after his probation was revoked and another crime was committed.

This time, police in Wake County say Cox broke into the home of a man who was trying to help him. The victim had just recently told Cox to move out, and the break-in was how Cox responded, according to Knightdale police investigators.

How could Mark Anthony Cox have been hired with this kind of record? Why would management allow this predatory slime to work in close quarters with unsuspecting co-workers? The article manages to ask the question without asking it: "The owners have been silent on the background check issue and their security policy."

Maybe this story from last week will shed a little light on the mystery:

Pepsi Beverages Co. will pay $3.1 million to settle federal charges of race discrimination for using criminal background checks to screen out job applicants — even if they weren’t convicted of a crime.

The settlement announced Wednesday with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is part of a national government crackdown on hiring policies that can hurt blacks and Hispanics.

Get that? Checking for a prospective employee's past criminal activity has an adverse effect on certain minorities.

Problem is, NOT checking past criminal activity has an adverse effect on innocent co-workers. What's a business to do - turn their employees into unwitting targets, or risk a crackdown from the national government?

The answer is obvious. So once again, in its never-ending effort to impose equality of outcome in the workplace, the government commits the unspeakable in pursuit of the impossible.

We already knew about Obama's expansion of Bush-era foreign policy, such as surging in Afghanistan and launching yet another "war of liberation" in Libya, despite lacking the authority to do so. And as we've pointed out before, an aggressive foreign policy leads to an oppressive domestic policy, as the disastrous National Defense Authorization Act, which now empowers DC's Armed Forces to suspend habeas corpus and indefinitely detain civilians, chillingly proves.

Obama is also doing his best to make America reflect the demographics you'd expect from a global empire. As FAIR reports, W's Open Borders policy is well under way:

Despite claiming resources are too limited to comprehensively enforce immigration laws, ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) announced the creation of a Detainee Hotline. This will be staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week with translation services available in several languages to accommodate those who "believe they may be U.S. citizens or victims of a crime."

ICE, responsible for issuing detainers for illegal alien criminals to ensure they are present for criminal and deportation hearings, has altered policy to allow only making a detainer effective upon an alien's conviction of a crime for which the alien was arrested. This shift to a discretionary "post-conviction" detainer ignores the fact that being in the country illegally is a violation of federal law while simultaneously welcoming criminal aliens back onto the streets since many may post bond and abscond before ever being convicted or may ultimately be convicted of a lesser offense.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) proposed a new rule that would help illegal aliens skirt the statutory 3 and 10-year bars to admission. The rule seeks to allow illegal alien relatives of U.S. citizens to stay in the U.S. while seeking waivers from the law, rather than doing so from outside the country. Congress passed the 3 and 10-year bars to inadmissibility in 1996 to discourage illegal immigration and marriage fraud.

President Obama issued an executive order Thursday that will make it easier for aliens to obtain nonimmigrant visas by waiving screening safeguards, increasing the potential for terrorism and visa over-stays. In addition to relaxing the screening process for issuing visas, President Obama also proposed expanding the Visa Waiver Program.

ICE attorneys in Denver and Baltimore have recommended that the agency "administratively close" 1,667 removal cases. The recommendation is a result of a six-week pilot review of all pending deportation cases in Denver and Baltimore immigration courts.

Tell me again why it matters which party is in power?

The Democratic-controlled Charlotte city council has passed some get-tough ordinances designed to knock the wind out of Occupy Charlotte's sails. The protesters can keep their charming tents on city property, but cannot cook or sleep there.

It's true these protests have attracted some unsavory (and brainless) elements, but I'm afraid council has gone too far in its attempts to clean up our city before the DNC comes to town. The ordinances actually empower the police to search people's backpacks and coolers - a clear violation of rights, in my opinion. Incredibly, the Charlotte police support this. Deputy Chief Harold Medlock even claimed backpacks "are frequently used to carry rocks and weapons."

We're so afraid of rocks that we're telling the police to conduct illegal searches?

Knives are now prohibited, and the new ban on body armor is so vague that someone could be arrested for wearing a bike helmet downtown.

Talk about over-reacting!

As much as I disagree with the aims and methods of the Occupy protesters, I have to say measures like this threaten us all, and should be opposed.

Boston Bruins' star goaltender Tim Thomas skipped Monday's White House visit by the Stanley Cup champions due to political differences with President Barack Obama.

Thomas, a Flint, Mich., native and one of only two American players on the Bruins' Stanley Cup roster last season, was the only Boston player to decline the invitation.

"I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People," Thomas said in a statement.

A lot of people would be so star-struck, they'd accept an invitation from Lucifer himself to go to the White House. Good for Tim Thomas!

In places like Uzbekistan, Romania and Egypt, North Carolina-based pilots and crews delivered prisoners to jails where they were held incommunicado and savagely tortured. Sometimes, the torturers were U.S. officials; other times, Americans had others do the dirty work.

The article goes on to detail how innocent people have been tortured and ruined by the CIA's renditions. Think about that the next time you're told to say the Pledge of Allegiance. It's good to know what you're pledging allegiance to.

Sunday's a good time to uncork the Think Tank for some big ideas.

Let's start with an article from Religion Dispatches. In a discussion of Ron Paul's politics, the author, Peter Laarman, frowns at the Establishment's universal condemnation of Ron Paul for his politically incorrect statements about race and the South. Laarman wonders why we must conclude that Paul has nothing to add to the political discourse because of certain taboo notions he's expressed in the past. Are we that rigid in our thinking?

He notes that the Western tradition does not concur:

We are compounded, the Bible seems to say. We are all compounded of bits of good and bits of evil in a complicated amalgam. And so trickster Jacob is not ultimately damned on account of his trickery in displacing his older brother’s inheritance, nor is King David ultimately damned for arranging to murder the warrior husband of his desired inamorata.

The great European-American epic poets and novelists who inherit both the Hellenic and Hebraic traditions tend to favor the Hebraic mode of shadow and inference. They are not especially interested in presenting us with any “pure” types: in giving us unalterably evil or incorruptibly good characters who never vary, never change it up.

The Establishment Thought Police, on the other hand, maintain that the world IS black and white. The unrighteous among us must be shunned. Any deviation from Approved Thought disqualifies one from discussion. Paul has no legitimacy as a result.

Look at what Approved Thought says about the Civil War: Because the South practiced slavery, it had no valid claim to self-government. Plus, we are not to shed a single tear for the suffering and death Southerners endured. They had it coming. And as for the military rule imposed on Southerners during Reconstruction? Tough.

But as Mr. Laarman points out, the Biblical and Western literary tradition is enriched with a more nuanced view of people and cultures. The most interesting fictional characters, from Emma Woodhouse to David Copperfield to Scarlett O'Hara, were complex, with both noble and selfish traits. As a kid, I preferred the flawed, more interesting Marvel comic book characters to the goody-goody Superman. When Marvel's signature superhero, Spiderman, used his powers to make money and impress girls rather than devoting himself to saving the world, I thought, "That's what I would do!"

I think Laarman's insight helps us understand why the South is home to so many literary giants, and why we're so religious. Richard Weaver once observed, "The Southerner accepts the irremediability of a certain amount of evil and tries to fence it around instead of trying to stamp it out and thereby spreading it. His is a classical acknowledgment of tragedy and of the limits of power."

That's also why Southerners are not going to jump on board a campaign to immanentize the eschaton. We know better.

Ron Paul vs. Rick Santorum

Of course, Paul is absolutely correct. The States have the power to deal with violent crimes, such as murder and robbery, and that includes abortion. When Paul voted against federal measures restricting abortion, he wasn't supporting abortion, but opposing DC's power grabs at State authority. He was opposing abortion by standing on principle, by protecting State's Rights - the legal, and most effective way to do so.

That's why I oppose DC's meddling in the same-sex "marriage" debate. The Defense of Marriage Act, like No Child Left Behind, is an illegal assumption of power that rightfully belongs to the people of the States.

Disapproval of Congress hits new high: poll

It's another record for Congress:

A record 84 percent of Americans say they disapprove of the way the Congress is doing its job compared with just 13 percent who approve of how things are going, according to a Washington Post/ABC News public opinion poll published on Monday.

The disapproval rating for Congress inched up two percentage points since October and reflects a year of lows for Congress that ended in a battle over a temporary extension of the payroll tax cuts for 160 million Americans.

How long can this go on? Here's a similar headline from last year, and here's one from the year before that. At some point, we have to start thinking outside the District.

The conclusion is inescapable: 13% of Americans are cuckoo.

Since Obama's coronation, his boosters have swooned that he is the reincarnation of Franklin Delano Roosevelt - the genteel liberal who would use the central government as a lever to lift the nation out of crisis, and push it toward greatness.

So far, however, things haven't gone according to plan. With so much opposition, Obama may not even win a second term. He can't impose his agenda unless he can rally the country behind him. Impossible?

But there's always the ultimate ace up the presidential sleeve - the same one that worked for FDR:

When officials want to go to war against another nation, the ideal is to maneuver that nation into doing the attacking. In that way, U.S. officials can exclaim, “We’ve been attacked! We’re innocent! We were just minding our own business! This is another day that will live in infamy!” ...

That, of course, was how FDR did it prior to the Pearl Harbor attack. He placed an embargo on oil to Japan, knowing that it would strangle the Japanese war machine. FDR also did his best to humiliate the Japanese in negotiations prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. When the attack came, FDR appeared shocked but he had gotten what he wanted — America’s entry into World War II, thanks to the attack by Japan on the United States.

That’s obviously what the ever-tightening sanctions on Iran are designed to do ...

Odd, isn't it, that the same liars and war profiteers who maneuvered us into war against Iraq are now howling for a preemptive war against Iran? They're even using the same lies about Iran now being the greatest threat to our security and freedom.

Here in Charlotte, any controversy concerning homosexuality brings out the black ministers - and no one can thunder against the "normalization" of perversity like they can. I wish I could be at this press conference.

Kevin Levin is a history teacher in Boston. His blog, Civil War Memory, advertises itself as "Where History, Heritage, and Education Intersect."

But instead of being a forum for the objective study of history, it's actually another echo chamber for politically correct, officially approved thought. What serious web site dedicated to understanding "History, Heritage, and Education" would spend so much time making fun of Confederate heritage?

A more honest motto for Levin's site would be "Dedicated to making Southerners denounce their ancestors as racist traitors."

Of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Levin grumbles:

Even more disturbing is the impression that membership implies a certain belief about the legitimacy of the Confederate experiment, whether it has to do with secession and/or treason. Finally, yesterday’s ceremony reinforced the impression that the organization is concerned as much with contemporary politics as it is with heritage/history.

Levin once argued the SCV should somehow honor the Confederate soldier while renouncing the Cause for which he fought:

You can honor your Confederate ancestor and not believe that secession was constitutional.
You can honor your Confederate ancestor and not believe in states rights.
You can honor your Confederate ancestor and believe that Lincoln was one of this nation’s greatest presidents.
You can honor your Confederate ancestor without believing that Lee and Jackson are worthy of adulation.
You can honor your Confederate ancestor and be thankful that the Confederacy lost the Civil War.

What pathetic creature would honor ancestors whose principles he's been taught to despise? I have no idea.

Frequent CWM commenter Andy Hall echoes Levin's disapproval of how the League of the South stresses the relevance of Southern history to today's politics:

the League of the South ... has a very explicit, present-day political agenda. Their explanations (and exonerations) for secession in 1860-61 are mostly seeking historical justification for their chosen, present-day governing philosophy.

Apparently, Mr. Levin cannot grasp that he, too, uses the history of the WBTS to promote a political agenda - a big-government agenda. Like all other apologists of the Empire, he dismisses Ron Paul as "nutty." And while Levin says he won't vote for tough-talking girly boy Rick Santorum, he agrees with Santorum's pro-centralization, anti-States' Rights argument that the "Civil War" "settled" the debate on State sovereignty and the right to peacefully secede.

Levin and his followers like to speculate about the hidden, sinister motives of Southern Heritage defenders. So I'd like to offer my own guess as to what motivates Levin and his true believers.

They like big government and all it does. They must. They have to relish the endless death and misery it unleashes on defenseless civilians in oil-rich countries. They worship power, and a government that refuses to recognize any limits on its power is one that demands their adoration and obedience. They admire a regime that flaunts that power at home and abroad, and now even claims the power to assassinate or imprison its citizens on a whim.

In short, they love Big Brother.

This is priceless:

Uber-interventionist John Bolton, who considered running for President himself because none of the other candidates were alarmist enough for him, has endorsed Mitt Romney saying he is “conservative enough.”

First of all, notice how in Bolton’s mind conservatism equates only to foreign policy belligerence. Is Romney “conservative enough” on abortion? On taxes? On spending? On guns? Does Bolton even care?

Second, I am a bit surprised by this endorsement, and I suspect Bolton is putting his job prospects in a future Romney Administration ahead of his actual assessment of who is hawkish enough. While Romney’s foreign policy pronouncements are pitch perfect neoconservatism, there is at least a hint of insincerity about them because Romney has demonstrated himself to be a pandering fool who will say whatever is necessary to get elected.

What happens when an "alarmist" endorses a "pandering fool"? Hope we don't find out!

A statistical difference between the races has been detected! But the Southern Poverty Law Center is on the case:

Less than half of Jefferson Parish public school students are African-Americans, but they account for three quarters of all student arrests in the schools, the Southern Poverty Law Center said Wednesday in a complaint to the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights. The 20-page complaint outlines what the center calls widespread, disproportionate and unfair arrests of black students for minor school disciplinary matters.

I hate to admit it, but the SPLC is right: If black kids are "less than half" (let's assume 40%) of Jefferson Parish students, and they account for 75% of arrests, that's a rate 1.8 times disproportionate to their numbers. (If blacks accounted for 40% of arrests, that would be 1 times their population. And EVERYONE KNOWS that any deviation from a 1 to 1 ratio when comparing racial statistics is ABSOLUTE PROOF of racism.)

How does this compare to the adult world? Well, the US Department of Justice tells us that in 2009, 28.3 percent of all persons arrested were black. Since blacks are 13% of the US population, that's an arrest rate of 2.1.

We must conclude, then, that the United States of America under Obama is 15% MORE RACIST than the Jefferson Parish school system.

So, when does the SPLC sue Eric Holder and Barack Obama for disproportionate arrest rates of blacks?

A man is facing up to 30 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to running an interstate prostitution ring out of a Charlotte residence he turned into a brothel.

U.S. Attorney Anne Tompkins says Filemon Guzman-Martinez pleaded guilty Wednesday in federal court to multiple charges. The 40-year-old Mexican citizen has been in custody since his October arrest.

Investigators say Guzman-Martinez advertised the brothel with business cards featuring his phone number, pictures of scantily clad women and the slogan "What do you have to lose?"

That slogan is pure marketing genius! It has everything: sex appeal, mystery, and lots of irony.

Scotland has many of the trappings of an independent nation - its own flag, sports teams and a history of achievements in science and literature.

The SNP argues that Scotland would prosper as a small country in its own right. Salmond told Reuters last year that Scotland would be entitled to the lion's share of North Sea oil revenues if it went its own way.

The moldy empires of the past are "broke and don't know it." This is much more than just the breakdown of overgrown, decrepit regimes; we're witnessing the re-awakening of cultures and the resurrection of nations thought lost in history.

The New Jersey legislature has passed a resolution condemning Lowe's for withdrawing its advertising on the "All-American Muslim" show:

This resolution condemns the decision of Lowe’s Companies, Inc., to withdraw its advertising from the TLC series “All-American Muslim” because the subjects of the show are Muslims. The people of the State of New Jersey take great pride in the diversity of our State and our Nation.

Here's what bugs me about this. No one said "All-American Muslim" can't air. Lowe's didn't say anything negative about Muslims. But because the company isn't subsidizing the show with its advertising dollars, it's committed a "shocking and insensitive insult" to Muslims, according to the resolution.

Compare that to what's being done to Pat Buchanan. The leftist, black nationalist pressure group Color of Change has "demanded" MSNBC fire Buchanan. And MSNBC's president has buckled:

Mr. Buchanan argues in “Suicide of a Superpower” — which has the subtitle “Will America Survive to 2025?” — that the “European and Christian core of our country is shrinking,” which is damaging the nation “ethnically, culturally, morally, politically.” The book also contains a chapter titled “The End of White America.”

Mr. Griffin said, “The ideas he put forth aren’t really appropriate for national dialogue, much less the dialogue on MSNBC.”

What these political geniuses might not grasp, however, is that in an unstable political system, the military often assumes ultimate power. The utter inability of Congress to accomplish even the simplest tasks these days spells trouble, so the nightmare scenario Naomi Wolf conjures here becomes more likely every day:

The moment this bill becomes law, though Congress is accustomed, in a weak democracy, to being the ones who direct and control the military, the power roles will reverse: Congress will no longer be directing and in charge of the military: rather, the military will be directing and in charge of individual Congressional leaders, as well as in charge of everyone else – as any Parliamentarian in any society who handed this power over to the military can attest.

Perhaps Congress assumes that it will always only be ‘they’ who are targeted for arrest and military detention: but sadly, Parliamentary leaders are the first to face pressure, threats, arrest and even violence when the military obtains to power to make civilian arrests and hold civilians in military facilities without due process.

Is Ron Paul a leftist?

Over at The American Spectator, Jeffrey Lord is whooping it up because Ron Paul didn't win the Iowa caucus. In Lord's view, Iowa Republicans stood up for conservatism - which to him, means perpetual war:

The Ron Paul Non-Cons have tonight been effectively marginalized.

Whatever else comes out of this Iowa Caucus night, one thing is clear: conservatives -- Reagan conservatives -- triumphed.

The combined vote of Santorum, Gingrich, Bachmann, Perry and even the moderate Mitt Romney swamped Ron Paul's controversial and decidedly non-conservative foreign policy.

As this is written, either Santorum or Romney are first, the other second. Between them that's about 50% of the vote to Ron Paul's 25% or so.

Which clearly means that no matter how Congressman Paul -- a good and decent man with a wildly left-wing foreign policy -- spins the results, his ideas have taken a thorough beating. His candidacy and his controversial foreign policy views have effectively been sent packing.

As well they should. There is nothing remotely historically conservative about Paul's views.

Congressman Paul is partly to blame for this perception. He effectively endorsed this view at the Sioux City debate on December 15. The moderator accused Paul of "running left of President Obama on the issue of Iran" because he, unlike Santorum and Bachmann, had ruled out a pre-emptive war. This was Paul's great chance to make mincemeant of the notion that conservatism equals war, and leftism, peace, but he let it slip away.

It was the Neocons who redefined conservatism as the aggressive use of force to promote "democracy." George W. Bush justified his invasion of Iraq as part of the "global democratic revolution." The so-called "Neoconservatives" evolved (mutated?) from leftists who smuggled their revolutionary ideology inside conservative language. Thus, it became possible to appeal to such conservative values as patriotism and honor to promote leftist goals.

No wonder so many liberals were dazzled by this new rhetoric. In addition to leftists such as Christopher Hitchens, Dianne Feinstein, and Alan Dershowitz, the liberal media fell into line to back Bush's Iraqi war. In 2002, when "shock and awe" was still a glimmer in Donald Rumsfeld's eye, NPR featured this report entitled, "Bush's National Security Strategy", with TALK OF THE NATION host Neal Conan and NPR correspondent Mike Schuster:

SHUSTER: So they're tying notions of liberty that come from the way the United States emerged into the world and the values that have operated in the United States for more than 200 years. And they're saying that the expansion of those ideas is in the national security of the United States.

CONAN: It's a pretty idealistic thought in a way.

SHUSTER: Yes.

Yes, isn't that idealistic? And what a seductive dialectic of liberalism and conservatism. Or, more accurately, tough-talking patriotism at the service of liberalism.

In fact, the use of force to usher in liberty is a completely leftist notion. It's the world view of anarchists and communists, not conservatives, who know that liberty is a natural outgrowth of culture. Edmund Burke, the father of modern conservatism, knew that rights came from "longstanding custom and practice" rather than theory or from outside imposition.

In fact, conservatives realize that war is more likely to lead to tyranny and chaos, not liberty. Senator Robert Taft expressed the traditional conservative position on war when he said, "No foreign policy can be justified except a policy devoted to the protection of the American people, with war only as the last resort and only to preserve that liberty." Many well-known conservatives opposed Bush's wars for just that reason, including Patrick Buchanan, Samuel Francis, Thomas Fleming, Joe Sobran, Charley Reese [a League of the South member], Jude Wanniski, Eric Margolis, and Taki Theodoracopulos. They were condemned as "unpatriotic conservatives" by the war party's mouthpieces.

Instead of promoting liberty, DC's wars have given us The PATRIOT Act, which authorized warrantless wiretaps, and the National Defense Authorization Act, which claims the government can arrest Americans and hold them INDEFINITELY without bringing charges against them. Perpetual war has constructed an all-powerful government with an unbreakable grip on our lives and property.

So who's advocating the REAL conservative position, Ron Paul, or Rick Santorum?

B.H. Obama, our beloved Temporary Dictator, has done a bang-up job. He was hired to enrich the ruling elite, prop up the Empire's puppets, and keep the war machine properly lubricated. And has he ever delivered:

Not only has Obama been a savior of the banking conglomerates that so generously financed his campaign, but he also has proved to be equally as solicitous of the needs of the military-industrial complex. He entered his re-election year by signing a $662 billion defense authorization bill that strips away some of our most fundamental liberties and keeps military spending at Cold War levels, and by approving a $60 billion arms deal with Saudi Arabia.

Ah, yes, Saudi Arabia, that oasis of liberal democracy in the Muddled East. The same regime that inflicts "cross amputation" as punishment, in which the all-powerful Saudi judge can order the defendant's right hand and left foot whacked off. The same US ally that, according to the article cited above, "rushed its forces into Bahrain last March to crush a popular uprising."

Problem is, Democrats who refuse to recognize Obama's hypocrisy are no better than Republicans. The result is that we're all blind to the evil our tax dollars pay for.
